We're avid hikers and found this trail to be really great! The lake was a beauty. It was a moderately trafficked trail so we saw hikers every now and then but not too crowded. The trail to Crystal Lake (4.9 miles one-way) branches off of the Monarch Lakes Trail at Chihuahua Bowl, passing the remnants of the old Chihuahua Mine near the south rim. NO SOUND whatsoever from nature. Passing from forest to clearing and back again, the trail is often shaded. The weather was awesome (fresh 75 degrees or so) and partly cloudy with some distant thunderstorms. So, make sure to slow down for the blind corners. This trail has waterfall views, creeks in certain areas (eagle creek), forests, a huge rocky area just before the lake, wildlife, awesome mountain views and of course the awesome lake area. Crazy huge potholes, one lane road pretty much the whole time, and the unpaved dirt sections have massive dips you need to watch out for. We did this trail on 08/14 to 08/15.
